Remembering when… Bennani won in the WTCC for Morocco in Hungary
This is the moment when Mehdi Bennani punched the air in triumph after claiming FIA World Touring Car Championship race win number two in the rain of Hungary back in April 2016.
Driving a Citroën C-Elysée for Sébastien Loeb Racing, Bennani led the Opening Race from start to finish as many big names, including Citroën’s José María López and Yvan Muller and Honda’s Tiago Monteiro and Rob Huff, were caught out by the challenging weather. All four opted for dry-weather tyres and finished outside of the points as a result.
“I never thought I’d win in rain conditions but it’s happened today and I’m very happy,” said Bennani, who was followed home by team-mate Tom Chilton. “I tried to manage a good start, I take a little gap and this gave me more confidence to drive consistently and this is what I tried to do. But in the condition like this you have to be brave to stay on the track. A lot of time I was close to going out of the track but it’s like this. We are driving against the best drivers in the world so we need to drive to the limit.”
López was lapped in that first race but later on claimed his third Main Race win from as many events from the DHL Pole Position.
