WTCC team helps to make it a winning return for Alex Zanardi
FIA World Touring Car Championship squad ROAL Motorsport played a key role as Alex Zanardi bagged an emotional comeback victory in the Italian GT finale at Mugello on Sunday.
Zanardi scored four wins during his five-year WTCC campaign following his recovery from life-threatening injuries and drove his ROAL-prepared BMW M6 GT3 to sixth place in Saturday’s race before coming home at the top of the order on Sunday.
“There are no words to describe what I feel,” said Zanardi, who took a break from racing to focus on his hugely successful participation in the Rio Paralympics.
“I saw the sun setting and it never looked that beautiful. To win the race is something else. I did not have the start I wanted, but I had a great car underneath me. So I knew it was just a question of putting in some good laps as soon as the guys in front of me pitted, and that is what I did.

"So when I came back on the circuit I found myself with a very comfortable lead, and I had the speed to stay away from the guys behind me and finish with the victory. Thanks to ROAL Motorsport for setting the car up and making it ready for me in a magnificent way.”
Zanardi’s Mugello triumph continued a successful 2016 season for ROAL Motorsport. The team, part-owned by inaugural WTCC champion Roberto Ravaglia, has guided Tom Coronel to two outright World Touring Car Championship victories and third place in the WTCC Trophy for independent racers.
ROAL and Coronel will be back in action when the Losail International Circuit near Doha hosts WTCC Race of Qatar from 24-25 November.
