Novak Djokovic scooped a fourth Laureus Sportsman of the Year award after a remarkable comeback on the tennis circuit in 2018, while gymnast Simone Biles was named Sportswoman of the Year after securing six medals – including four gold – at the 2018 World Championships.
The Serbian looked to be heading for retirement after struggling with form and injury, but mounted a terrific revival to win Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
Only fellow tennis great Roger Federer (5) has won more awards than Djokovic, who is now tied with Usain Bolt in the overall charts.
Biles became the first woman since 1987 to earn a medal in all four individual events – vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor – while she also secured all-around and team titles at the artistic championships in Qatar.
The American is already the most decorated gymnast in World Championship history – and she will have aspirations of adding to her medal haul given she is only 21.
Tiger Woods won the Comeback of the Year award after claiming a first title in five years, while Naomi Osaka earned Breakthrough of the Year following her maiden Slam triumph at the US Open.
American skier Lindsey Vonn, fresh from entering retirement, won the Spirit of Sport Award, while Arsenal great Arsene Wenger was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.
