Final World Cup races cancelled due to high winds, Viktoria Rebensburg takes GS title

The men's cancellation came after the ninth and final giant slalom of the women's World Cup tour was cancelled due to high winds at the Are ski resort in Sweden on Sunday.

The cancellation handed Viktoria Rebensburg, on 582 points after eight races, a third GS title of her career and first since 2012.

The 2010 GS Olympic champion held a 92-point advantage over Tessa Worley (490) coming into the final round, meaning Worley would have had to have placed first with Rebensburg recording a DNF for 28-year-old Worley to defend her title.

Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin finished third on 481 points.

Later on Sunday, the final men’s slalom of the season also fell foul of the inclement weather, but had no bearing on the overall or slalom standings as Austria’s Marcel Hirscher had already wrapped up victory in both following a stellar season.

The cancellation denied Hirscher the opportunity to surpass the record for most wins in a single campaign.

The 29-year-old’s win in Saturday’s giant slalom had pulled him level with Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark (1978-79) and Hermann Maier (2000-01) on 13 wins in a single season, and the Austrian superstar was heavy favourite to add to his haul of seven wins from 13 slalom outings this year.
