The Austrian produced a sensational first run of 49.67 seconds before following that up with a 53.89 run as he edged out Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen by 0.39 seconds.
The victory was Hirscher's 54th World Cup triumph – only two-time Olympic champion Ingemar Stenmark has more with 86.
And the 28-year-old claims it was a special feeling to level with his compatriot Maier in front of his home crowd and thanked the fans for their support.
Marcel Hirscher: "I went for the victory and I knew that Henrik [Kristoffersen] was going at 100 per cent and I had to do the same. I think 99.9 per cent of the spectators were great, it was amazing day.
"It is unbelievable [to be level with Maier], it is a dream come true. There are some more races coming up so we will see what is possible.
"To celebrate this in front of Scladming and in front of this amazing crowd – it was so loud. I have never skied here with so much emotion."
The result also gives Austria it's 500th men's World Cup victory – making it the first country to reach the milestone.
Completing the podium places was Swiss skier Daniel Yule, who finished with a time of 1:45.69, just 0.05 clear of Sweden's Andrew Myhrer.
Meanwhile Great Britain's Dave Ryding continued his Olympic Winter Games preparation by finishing in twelfth place.
The Brit was joint twelfth following a first run of 51.69 but a second run of 55.04 means he could not improve on his position.
