Dave Ryding is one of Britain's best-known winter athletes and an outside chance for a medal in PyeongChang.
- Name - Dave Ryding
- Date of Birth - 5/12/1986
- Place of Birth - Bretherton, UK
- Sport/Discipline - Alpine skiing (Slalom)
- Honours - Europa Cup: Gold x1
An alpine skier, Ryding focuses entirely on the slalom discipline and recorded Britain's joint best ever World Cup result in January when reaching the podium in Kitzbuhel.
Ryding claimed silver to equal Konrad Bartelski's feat in the downhill in Val Gardena in 1981 - and ended the 2016-17 season with six top-10 finishes, finishing eight overall in the World Cup slalom standings.
PyeongChang will be his third Olympic Games after travelling to Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, where he came 27th and 17th in the slalom respectively, but Ryding is riding on the crest of a wave following last season's impressive exploits.
The 30-year-old is a rarity on the circuit in that he learned his trade on dry ski slopes, at his local club in Pendle, Lancashire, and did not even start training on snow until he was 12. in fact, he continued to race on dry slopes until the age of 21.
He told the Telegraph in October about the 2017-18 season:
I don’t see a limit for myself anymore. When I was a kid I dreamed of making the top 30, but I did that, then I wanted to be in the top 15, and I did that. Now I think if I can keep improving there’s no reason I can’t take on the likes of Hirscher and Kristoffersen. I think they can be caught, no question.
