Austria's Renate Goetschl called an immediate end to her season after finishing 26th in Monday's Olympic super-G race but promised to be back next season. The former World Cup champion and two-time Olympic medallist saw her hopes of winning an Olympic gold medal finally melt away in Monday's race.
"I was losing time all the way from the top to the bottom," said Goetschl who has been struggling with a knee injury for most of this season.
"I am stopping for this season but I am not retiring yet. I will get some treatment and see how things go."
The 30-year-old, who finished Monday's race 2.36 seconds behind winning team mate Michaela Dorfmeister, had already said that these would be her last Winter Games.
SHRUG OFF
Dorfmeister also came into these Games as one of the top names in women's skiing yet to win a gold medal although she was able to neatly shrug off that tag by winning both the downhill title and Monday's super-G.
"That's life. What can I do? I tried and tried but it just wasn't possible," Goetschl said before leaving the finish area. "It would have been wonderful to get a gold but now Michi is double Olympic champion which is also wonderful. But what can I do?"
She will miss women's super-G World Cup races in Norway and Finland plus the finals in Are, Sweden from March 15-19.
