July 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins became the first quarterback to play under the franchise tag for a second consecutive season after failing to sign a long-term deal on Monday.

Cousins, who will make $23.9 million this season, and the Redskins can't negotiate a long-term deal until the season ends by virtue of being unable to come to an agreement by Monday's deadline.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell will play on a $12.12 million exclusive franchise tag this season after the deadline came and went without a long-term deal.
The Steelers can tag the versatile Bell for the second straight season in 2018 at $14.54 million or re-sign him. The two sides cannot resume negotiations until the season ends.

The Carolina Panthers fired general manager Dave Gettleman after four seasons, the team announced.
The 66-year-old Gettleman had been GM of the Panthers since 2013.
The surprise move comes nine days before the Panthers open training camp on July 26 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was involved in a late-night altercation at a Dallas bar, according to multiple reports.
A Dallas Police Department spokesperson told Mike Fisher of 105.3 FM The Fan in Dallas and ESPN's Adam Schefter that no arrests were made in connection with the incident, which took place at the Clutch Bar and Restaurant on Sunday night. A source also confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that Elliott was involved in the altercation.
Elliott, 21, and a bouncer reportedly were involved in the incident.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who underwent eight eye surgeries since November to restore vision, is ready to get on an airplane again.
The 61-year-old Zimmer has been medically cleared to resume air travel and will fly back to Minnesota this week to get ready for training camp, a person with direct knowledge told Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press.
