The 20-year-old from Pudsey was part of the GB team that finish fourth before placing eighth in the all-around.
But the high bar was always his best chance of a medal, following on from his 2016 European gold on the apparatus.
Wilson's score of 15.466 put him in the medal positions, but wasn't enough to get the better of Germany's experienced Hambuchen who put in a close to flawless display to claim gold.
The very last routine of the competition saw Wilson bumped down to bronze by American Danell Leyva, but the medal is Team GB's seventh of an incredible gymnastics meet.
Earlier on Tuesday night, Amy Tinkler took a surprise bronze in the floor.
Wilson was a prodigy in youth gymnastics, with Youth Olympics and European golds already on his CV before teaming up with the England men's team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
