The deal is worth $1.25 million if Hundley is added to the 40-man roster.
Hundley batted .241 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs for the San Francisco Giants
last season.
The 35-year-old Hundley has played 11 major league seasons, and Oakland
executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane was happy to land
him.
"He's a well-respected veteran coming off a really good year," Beane said.
"We're lucky to make that kind of addition."
Hundley is known for his defense and strong ability to call a game from behind
the plate. That led Athletics manager Bob Melvin, a former catcher, to term
Hundley as a "gamer."
"He's one of those quarterbacks in the field," Melvin told reporters. "He's a
big pickup for us. I know he's excited about being here. You always want a
veteran guy, especially in that job, who you have the communication with."
Chris Herrmann and Josh Phegley are the only catchers currently on Oakland's
40-man roster. Sean Murphy, a third-round pick in 2016, is viewed as the
franchise's catcher of the future.
Hundley has a .248 career average with 91 homers and 371 RBIs in 943 games
with the San Diego Padres (2008-14), Baltimore Orioles (2014), Colorado
Rockies (2015-16) and San Francisco Giants (2017-18).
