Chicago Marathon winner Robert Cheruiyot suffered bruising and bleeding on his brain at the finish line in Sunday's race.
The Kenyan was one step away from victory when he lost his balance and fell hard to the ground although he still managed to cross the finish line.
At first it appeared Cheruiyot was simply shaken up.
He was treated at the finish line and later taken to the hospital with what was then thought to be a mild concussion.
But doctors have said that when Cheruiyot's head slammed into the ground he suffered bruising plus internal and external bleeding to his brain.
However, Cheruiyot should make a full recovery and doctors say his injuries should not prevent his return to marathon competition.
