Race walker Valery Borchin, who won a silver medal at this week's European championships, was one of 15 Russian track and field athletes to fail drugs test last year, the country's anti-doping chief said on Wednesday.
"We tested 210 men and 353 women last year and 22 samples came out positive," Oleg Dmitrusenko was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency All Sport.
"As a result, 15 athletes were banned. Twelve received a two-year suspension and three people one-year bans."
Borchin, 20, had just returned from a one-year suspension to finish second behind Spaniard Francisco Fernandez in the 20 kms walk in Gothenburg on Tuesday. Borchin tested positive for the stimulant ephedrine.
"His ban ended on May 31 and four days later he had already won the 20 kms walk at the Russian national championships in Saransk. Then, on Aug. 8 he won his first major medal at the European championships," said Dmitrusenko.
Russian officials have cracked down on drug offenders in recent months as part of their campaign to comply with the policies of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
This year, another six Russian athletes received doping bans. Last month, Olympic women's discus champion Natalya Sadova received a two-year ban after testing positive for the steroid methandienone.
