Former Olympic gold medallist Tim Montgomery has been arrested in connection with a multi-million euro bank fraud and money laundering scheme, prosecutors say. The former 100m world record holder and several others were charged in a grand jury indictment
The group are charged with conspiracy to defraud banks by depositing four million euros in stolen, altered and counterfeit cheques.
The 31-year-old ran 9.78 seconds to break the 100m world record in 2002.
He also participated in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, winning gold with the US 4x100m relay team.
Following being handed a two year ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for taking banned substances supplied by US laboratory Balco, Montgomery announced his retirement from Athletics in December.
The former champion later asked the CAS to overturn the ban citing an alleged conflict of interest.
