RUSSIANS LOOKING GOOD
The home fans could have reason to cheer later on Saturday with hot favourite Yelena Isinbayeva in the pole vault, triple jumper Tatyana Lebedeva and world 3,000m record holder Liliya Shobukhova in action.
Russia's World outdoor long jump Tatyana Kotova jumped furthest in qualifying with 6.73, as she battles Tianna Madison - who won gold in Helsinki - for a place on the podium.
TRAMMEL OUT FOR HURDLE GLORY
World 60 metres broze medallist Terrence Trammell began his bid for hurdles glory by winning the first round of the event at the world indoor championships on Saturday in a time of 7.64s.
"It wasn't too much of a disappointment," Trammell told reporters in reference to his third place in Friday's 60 metres final, which was won by compatriot Leonard Scott.
"I just had to get back and get focused on my other race. I had to go back to my therapist and make sure my legs were ok but I'm on the way back now."
Cuba's Dayron Robles produced the fastest time of the day winning his heat in 7.55 seconds.
