Washington has traded three-times All-Star Jose Vidro to the Seattle Mariners for two prospects.
The 32-year-old, a .301 career hitter, has been hampered by leg injuries in the past two years but still hit .289 with seven homers and 47 RBI in 126 games last season.
In exchange for Vidro, the Nationals acquired 22-year-old right-handed pitcher Emiliano Fruto and 25-year-old outfielder Chris Snelling.
In 28 appearances last season with Tacoma of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, Fruto had 10 saves and a 3.18 ERA while limiting opposing hitters to a .204 batting average.
Snelling hit .250 with three home runs and eight RBI in 36 games for the Mariners last year.
