Canelo is facing a compaint from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after two positive tests for the performance-enhancing drug. A hearing is expected to take place on April 18.
If found guilty Canelo would face a minimum one-year suspension from the sport, which could be back-dated to the day of the first positive test, meaning he would be eligible to box again from August 18.
Canelo continues to deny wrongdoing, saying his tests are the result of consuming contaminated meat in Mexico.

Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez explained the reason for Canelo's withdrawal on Tuesday, saying:
“It’s unlikely this matter will be resolved by [April 18] properly and obviously we need enough time to promote a fight of this magnitude.”
And in a press conference Canelo said:
I am sad and feel powerless that I can’t make this fight happen at this point. I have always been a clean fighter and I always will be a clean fighter. I want to prove without a doubt that I have never intentionally ingested Clenbuterol. I have nothing to hide and I want to be open and transparent through this process. .... I have never taken illegal substances and this is no different. I will accept and respect the decision of the commission.
