Birtley boxing twins Pat and Luke McCormack both guaranteed medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with victories in their respective quarter-final bouts on Tuesday.
Luke McCormack silenced a partisan home crowd to win a thrilling bout with Australian Liam Wilson, while Pat followed suit in the evening with a unanimous triumph over Musa Bwogi of Uganda.
A third member of the Birtley boxing club, Callum French, could join the McCormack twins as a Gold Coast medallist if he wins his lightweight quarter-final against Manish Kaushik on Wednesday.
Luke McCormack clearly revelled in the noisy atmosphere as he overcame his former sparring partner Wilson, and managed to impress his brother in the process.
“I watched Luke on the television and I love his showboating, said Pat McCormack. “I think he gave the crowd something to enjoy even though he beat the Aussie.
“I thought I performed well too. It was a different sort of opponent, he didn’t really come in much and was a bit stronger than the last guy but I got the dominant win I was looking for.”
