Play was delayed by three hours as heavy rain fell in Mumbai. But when the Aussies took to the crease after the break it took under an hour for them to reach their revised target of 116.
With eight wickets to spare, it was a decisive victory.
Shane Watson and Damien Martyn were the stars of the day after a dream partnership that produced 103 runs.
The rain during the break made batting difficult but the technically sound Martyn looked in complete control, while Ashes hope Watson played some fine drives off the pacemen en route to his second fifty of the tournament.
Having won the toss at the Brabourne Stadium Windies skipper Brian Lara opted to bat and initially looked like they could be on course to upset the odds and defend the title they won in England in 2004.
However, despite scoring 80 from their first 10 overs, the defending champions couldn't maintain the pace and eventually were dismissed for 138 all out after some fantastic bowling from paceman Nathan Bracken.
Having won the previous two World Cups, the Champions Trophy had always eluded Australia in four attempts prior to this tournament.
This victory will be a massive boost for the team ahead of the start of the Ashes in three weeks time.
