Flintoff - who usually bats lower down the order - made a half century while battling third down the order in a friendly match against a Rajasthan Cricket Association team on Thursday.
It will be Flintoff's first competitive international since ankle surgery in the summer.
"I have had a few opportunities earlier in my career," he said. "I'm a bit more experienced and confident about my game on things like my technique. I feel I'm more equipped to do that now."
Flintoff will not bowl in order to ensure his fitness for the Ashes tour of Australia next month.
Flintoff said the presence of other all-rounders such as Paul Collingwood and Jamie Dalrymple had contributed to his decision.
