The Aussies seemed to be cruising at 182 for four in the 42nd over, chasing 235 for victory, but the run out of opener Adam Gilchrist for 92 sparked a collapse.
Dwayne Bravo deceived Michael Clarke (47) with a slower ball, taking a return catch, before Jamaican quick bowler Taylor removed Mike Hussey, Brett Lee and Brad Hogg to finish with four for 49.
He had earlier removed Australian skipper Ricky Ponting for just one as the Baggy Green slumped to 81-4 after 20 overs, but a century partnership between Gilchrist and Clarke had put them in command.
However, five wickets fell for just 39 runs as they finished on 224-9, suffering a 10-run defeat, and making Saturday's game with old rivals England a must win for both sides.
Earlier, Runako Morton cracked a pugnacious 90 not out and captain Brian Lara hit 71 as the men from the Caribbean made 234 for six.
The pair shared a 137-run stand for the fifth wicket in the day-night match after they had slumped to 63 for four after winning the toss with Wavell Hinds, Chris Gayle, Dwayne Smith and Ramnaresh Sarwan falling in quick succession.
The 37-year-old Lara, batting at number six, took 31 balls to score his first boundary before opening up with a series of breathtaking strokes, clubbing seven fours and two sixes en route to his 61st one-day fifty.
He was finally out when he lofted paceman Glenn McGrath to Andrew Symonds in the covers but 28-year-old Morton - playing instead of Shivnarine Chanderpaul - took full advantage of a reprieve on 41 when he was dropped by Ponting at mid-off after giving Nathan Bracken the charge in an innings that featured seven fours and a six.
