Darren Lehmann quits as Australia coach over ball-tampering scandal

Darren Lehmann has announced that he will be stepping down as the head coach of the Australian cricket team at the end of the final test against South Africa.

The news comes in the wake that Steve Smith and David Warner have been axed as captain and vice-captain of the team and banned for 12 months for their part in the ball-tampering scandal, whilst Cameron Bancroft has been banned for nine months.
Lehmann was initially given a vote of confidence from Cricket Australia, who said that he was not involved and was questioning why his players were involved in the incident.
Lehmann then said that he was the right person to change the culture of Australian cricket in a press conference ahead of the final test of the series.
However he has now said that he will be standing down at the end of the test.
A tearful Lehmann said "As many who sit in this room will know, life on the road means a lot of time away from loved ones and after speaking to my family, it is the right time to step away.
Speaking to the players and saying goodbye is the toughest thing I have had to do
"Its been happening for a few days and you think you can keep going but the amount of abuse just takes it toll. They made a mistake.
"Speaking to my family, they've had enough of travelling 300 days
"This was entirely my decision. I have been speaking to the hierarchy in the last couple of days."
