That means the gap between the Kazakhstan skier and Cologna is now down to 74.4 seconds, though only Sunday's 9km pursuit remains in this year's programme.
The Swiss racer is therefore close to assured of the overall Tour de Ski win, needing to avoid disruption in the finale having finished fourth in Saturday's mass start.
Cologna's time of 38:42.6 saw him just miss out on the race podium in Italy, with Poltoranin victorious after stopping the clock in 38:40.3.
That was the 30-year-old's second podium of the competition, with Russia's Andrey Larkov and Alex Harvey of Canada rounding out the top three in a tight and frantic finish.
For Harvey this was a season's best result, taking him into fourth place in the Tour de Ski standings, just over a second behind Sergey Ustiugov.
But the main prize seems to be out of the grasp of Britain's Andrew Musgrave, who could only finish 27th in the classic mass start to sit 18th after six of the seven races.
