After an extra-end winner helped GB edge past Switzerland 6-5 earlier on Wednesday, the team – led by skip Kyle Smith – put in a valiant display against Canada, who have won the past three men’s Olympic titles.
Canada led 4-1 after three ends, though GB fought back to trail 5-4 after the eighth.
And after a score-less ninth round, the Canadian’s took advantage of having the last stone for the final end, taking one final point to win 6-4.
Meanwhile, the GB women were more dominant in their first preliminary game with the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR), forcing them to concede the match at 10-3.
Skip Eve Muirhead's team were 3-0 up after the opening end and stretched their lead to an unassailable seven points by the seventh end, with the OAR team deciding to shake hands and sportingly congratulate GB on a comprehensive win.
