Cycling news – Kirsten Wild defends omnium title as Katie Archibald comes out unscathed from crash

Kirsten Wild defended her world omnium title after beating Letizia Paternoster by two points on Friday night in Poland.

Wild, now a five-time world champion, who also won silver in the scratch earlier this week, totalled 117 points as the Dutch 36-year-old reigned supreme once more.

Paternoster comfortably took silver ahead of Jennifer Valente, who finished tied with Yumi Kajihara on 106pts, but crucially won more points in the final event – the points race.

Valente collided with Briton’s Katie Archibald with more than 50 laps to go, but both riders remarkably recovered, with the American medalling after a crucial final sprint in the points race.

An early exit for Archibald in the elimination race dealt the Briton a huge blow in her pursuit for a medal after she replaced Laura Kenny.

Archibald won gold in the madison last year, and will be out to defend her title in the discipline on Saturday after luckily coming out of her crash with Valente unscathed.

Hong Kong’s Lee Wai Sze won her first world gold in six years when beating Australian Stephanie Morton in the women’s sprint finals.

Lee won the opening two races to take gold, leaving Morton to settle for silver in the event for the third world championships in a row.

France’s Mathilde Gros claimed bronze when beating Lea Sophie Friedrich 2-0 in what was the battle of the 19-year-olds.

Filippo Gana stormed to men’s individual pursuit gold, beating Domenic Weinstein in the final, with fellow Italian David Plebani ousting Alexander Evtushenko to take bronze.

It was the third time Gana took gold in the individual pursuit, having won at London 2016 and last year in Apeldoorn.

Meanwhile, Quentin Lafargue won the men’s 1km time trial for France ahead of Theo Bos of the Netherlands and fellow Frenchman Michael D’Almeida.

In the men’s points race, the Netherlands’ Jan Willem van Schip took gold ahead of Sebastian Mora Vedri, with Ireland’s Mark Downey claiming bronze.
