Cycling news - Geraint Thomas wins Welsh Sports Personality of the Year
Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has added yet another honour to his record-breaking year as he was named the 2018 BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year.
After becoming the first Welshman and third Briton to claim cycling's golden prize in July, Thomas was presented with the trophy for the second time in his career at a ceremony in Newport.
The double Olympic gold medallist joins Jade Jones and Colin Jackson as multiple winners of the title and was delighted to join such exalted company.
"It's massive," he told BBC Sport Wales.
"It's something I always grew up watching when I was younger. Just to be nominated shows you've done something special. To win it and to have everyone vote for me is really nice and it's a lovely way to finish off the year."
Thomas brushed off competition from Commonwealth Games gold medallist Elinor Barker and Winter Olympic bronze medallist Laura Deas to be crowned winner.
And the accolade represents the cherry on top of what has been an outstanding year for the Cardiff native.
In addition to his triumph in the Tour, Thomas claimed the Critérium du Dauphiné title in June, getting the wheels turning on what would be a remarkable string of results.
"Even before the Tour, winning the Dauphiné was my biggest result until that point and then obviously to go on and do what happened in the Tour was insane really," he continued.
"I never really thought about the end result, it was always just about the process and getting to the Tour in the best shape I could and then go from there.
"It worked out pretty well in the end, but I never really got carried away, it was always day by day – that's how I treated the whole year really."
And while he has time to savour his latest gong, the 32-year-old is by no means planning on letting up when it comes to life on the bike.
"It does give me that boost that I've done it know, I know what it takes," he added.
"I'll try to improve again for next year, but who knows how everybody else improves, obviously they're going to get better.
"When it comes to bike racing as well there are so many variables, as I well know from so many races and seasons.
"I'll just get back into training and try and get into the best shape I can for next July and take it from there again." Sportsbeat 2018
