Cycling news - Kristoff wins Stage Two, takes GC lead of Deutschland Tour
Updated 30/08/2019 at 18:06 GMT
Alexander Kristoff won the sprint home at the end of Stage Two and established a ten-second lead of the Deutschland Tour.
The Norwegian rider beat out Sonny Colbrelli and Yves Lampaert, with Britain's Ben Swift in fourth position on the longest of the tour's four stages.
Colbrelli and Lampaert are also second and third on the general classification after two stages ten and 12 seconds behind Kristoff respectively.
In an eventful race, Kristoff lost contact with leaders during the race but managed to get back on terms in time for the finishing sprint where he came out on top.
“On the last ascent I lost contact, but managed to get back on [and] in the sprint I felt really good," Kristoff said.
"When Colbrelli jumped I was a bit boxed in, but then I managed to pass."
Kristoff feels he is back to his best form ahead of the UCI Road World Championships next month, but tempered expectations of retaining the red jersey over the following two days.
"I didn’t win since Switzerland, before the Tour de France, where I wasn’t at my best," Kristoff said.
"Now, however, I am returning in good condition to aim for the world championship.
"For the overall GC I think it’s difficult because today I was at the limit and tomorrow it will be even harder, but I will definitely try."
Stage Three will sees the riders go from Gottingen to Eisenach tomorrow, before they set off for Erfurt on the last stage on Sunday.
