Buongiorno and welcome to live coverage of stage 2 - sorry, stage 5 (boom boom!) - of the Giro d'Italia. It's a second successive lumpy day in Sardinia as the riders tackle three categorised climbs and numerous hills in the 153km stage from Agrigento to Santa Ninfa.

Rohan Dennis will wear the pink jersey on Mount Etna tomorrow after the Australian retained his one-second lead over Tom Dumoulin on GC.

Here's how Enrico Battaglin won his third career stage scalp on the Giro d'Italia...

The big loser of the day is Miguel Angel Lopez of Astana who came home around 30 seconds after his spill 5km from the finish.

Confirmation of the top 10 today. Congratulations to Battaglin but bravo to Schachmann and Pozzovivo for getting in the mix after being held up by that crash 14km from the finish.

Schachmann was actually denied third place by Jose Goncalves (Katusha-Alpecin). So close for Gio Visconti, who hails from Sicily, but it's the northern Italian Enrico Battaglin - third yesterday - who takes the spoils. What an exciting finish.

The 28-year-old Italian powered past Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) to take the win - his third on the Giro d'Italia. And wow - was that Max Schachmann who took third place for Quick-Step? If so, that's mighty impressive for the rider who was held up by that crash...

We have about 30 riders in the leading group as the road flattens out ahead of the flamme rouge.

Tim Wellens is right there on the front again - and so is Pozzovivo. Dennis is struggling. It's Juul Jensen on the front setting a tempo for Yates.

It's blown apart as Bahrain Merida throw down the hammer on this climb.

Vendrame has been caught now that the road is going uphill... Lopez has Lutsenko and Sanchez trying to pace him back. Panic stations for Astana.

CRASH: Miguel Angel Lopez of Astana misjudges a corner and falls onto the grass verge. The Colombian will have a struggle to get back on now...

Close shave for Vendrame who is almost taken out by a passing motocyclist. Terrible driving there.

Schachmann finally makes it on to the back of the peloton, which is being driven now by Mitchelton-Scott.

Correction: Max Schachmann isn't back with the pack yet. He was with a load of Quick-Step team-mates who decided to stay with Viviani, so he's got his work cut out fighting back on to preserve his white jersey.

Our lone leader Andrea Vendrame still has 20 seconds over the pack as he passes under the 10-to-go banner.
