Here's how Viviani took his fourth win in the torrential rain.

No change in the general classification after the rivals for pink managed to negotiate their way through that potential banana skin of a stage. Simon Yates will enter the final mountain stages with his 56-second over Tom Dumoulin intact.

Amazing that no one skittled over in the rain there...

Danny van Poppel and Jens Debusschere, who recovered with aplomb, complete the top five in that messy, wet finish.

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) recovered to take second place but ran out of road after being boxed in earlier. Niccolo Bonifazio (Trek-Segafredo) took third place.

Victory for Elia Viviani of Quick-Step Floors! It's win number four for the Italian, who further cements his lead in the maglia ciclamino competition.

Viviani has Van Poppel on his wheel. Bennett is further back.

Viviani in third wheel now behind team-mates Stybar and Sabatini.

Zak Dempster takes it up on the front for Israel Cycling Academy, working for Sbragli perhaps.

Viviani and three Quick-Step riders are creeping up. It's still LottoNL-Jumbo on teh front.

Sky and Mitchelton-Scott on the front still despite their GC riders going through the 3km mark. And now the rain starts!

Lammetink is about to be caught but there's no real organisation yet. Viviani and Bennett are sticking to each other but they're both quite far back.

Lammertink has eight seconds and still no sign of the rain that's engulfed the finish.

Another attack - this time from Maurits Lammertink of Katusha. They're probably hearing from their directeurs sportifs that it's raining cats and dogs at the finish, which could play into the hands of a plucky attacker.

It's about to come back together when Stybar puts in a huge dig. He's due a big win - but it won't be today. The pack swallow them up and it's all together again.

Brambilla, Gesink, Benedetti, Henao and Stybar - you wouldn't have thrown them together in an 11th hour break. But there you go. The gap is tiny though.

Zdenek Stybar and Sergio Henao have managed to bridge over to the three leaders.

It's not raining on the riders right now but it's pouring at the finish. And there's an opportunistic attack from Gianluca Brambilla! Robert Gesink goes with him and they have a Bora rider - Cesare Benedetti - in pursuit.

There's a huge bottleneck out of yet another roundabout and amazingly no one comes down. But it will string out the peloton even further. LottoNL-Jumbo and Bora are on the front, with Sunweb, Sky and Mitchelton-Scott all far forward and keeping their GC men out of trouble.

Sanchez and De Marchi have sat up and will be caught very soon.
