'Riders all over the place!' - huge crash dents GC stars' hopes
A big crash on Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia has put a dent in the hopes of some of the General Classification favourites.
With just over six kilometres to go, a huge collision caused a group of riders – including many of the Lotto Soudal team and Team Katusha – to be knocked off their bikes, with some sent into a road-side ditch.
Tom Dumoulin was also caught up in it, with the Dutchman sporting a cut knee towards the end of the race.
Crucially, because the crash happened more than 3km from the end of the stage, the riders involved cannot be credited with the same finishing time as those that they were with at the time.
It means a host of stars are way down the standings, with Dumoulin 4mins 30 seconds off the pace and Simon Yates also losing around 16 seconds.
