The home of British cycling will welcome a slew of incredible female riders under the Six Day lights, with the inspiring Barker siblings aptly announced on International Women’s Day.
Elinor, fresh from being crowned track world champion for the fourth time last month, and bright young star Megan will join British cycling stars Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald on the boards from March 22-24.
Overall Six Day champion in 2017, Elinor can’t wait to race in her adopted city and through her showmanship rear the next generation of track fans.
I've raced a lot in Manchester over the years – it’s special. We've been spoiled in the last few years with home events. I love it when there are events in Manchester because friends and family from outside of cycling can come and watch and experience it. They're not always cycling fans to start but then they come and watch and enjoy it and then they're tuning in every weekend. I think that’s what Six Day is very good at – engaging the riders and the crowd and having these events is what we all love about cycling. It's still competitive but it's fun and social. That's really important.
Barker struck gold in the women’s scratch race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championship in Poland last week, adding to her impressive list of accolades which include a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, victory at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2013 and 2014 as well as a hat-trick of golds at the UEC European Track Championships between 2013 and 2015.
Younger sister Megan admits she feels no shortage of trepidation entering a field that includes world champion Wild and Jarmila Machačová, but is relishing the prospect.
I’m excited and scared! At my first Six Day in London most of the top riders were there. The racing was so hard. But it’s the best experience you can get. You look down the start lists and it gives you butterflies. But you just do it. There’s no point in racing if you’re not challenging yourself and it’s a great opportunity to see where you’re at.
