Impressive Thibaut Pinot wins Tour of the Alps

Thibaut Pinot has won the Tour of the Alps after finishing in the pack on the race's final stage on Friday.

Mark Padun of Bahrain-Merida burst clear to win a bolshy fifth stage at the end of a week of tough climbing.

Pinot: It was an incredible race

But further back was where the General Classification was decided, with Pinot withstanding challenges from his GC rivals to become the first Frenchman to win the race since 1997.

Pinot will hope to carry that form into next month's Giro d'Italia, where he will start as one of the contenders to take Tom Dumoulin's crown.
