But the Bromsgrove track cyclist believes her success is nothing but a biproduct of hard work and being part of a GB squad that accepts nothing less than perfection.
After riding to silver in the scratch race at her home European Championships in Glasgow this summer, Kay admits that even she has been taken back by her recent success.
But with the TISSOT UCI Track Cycling World Cup returning to London this December, the 22-year-old is far from resting on her laurels across the rest of 2018.
"When you are in the GB squad you are always striving for results and you are always striving to be better," she said.
"People achieve things at such a young age here and you have got to always be pushing for results.
"I definitely think that at the Commonwealth Games I was surprised by bronze medal because of the calibre of riders there.
"I think I was a bit shocked that it was my first Commonwealth Games and I didn't really think that I would medal.
"I think I surprised myself a bit, but I also know that I trained incredibly hard for that and I am capable of it."
Pencilled in to feature at the Lee Valley VeloPark in December, Kay will compete on a track that holds a special place in her heart after watching the likes of Laura Kenny, Joanna Rowshell-Shand and Dani Rowe steal the show at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
With the added thought of competing at an event that gave kick started her career in the aftermath of Rio 2016, the Newport-based rider didn't refrain from indulging in a hint of nostalgia when talking up the star-studded event.
"I think there's something special about that velodrome, about it being where the home Olympics were and the cycling team doing such an amazing job," she added.
"When you walk in it gives you goose bumps. I remember the atmosphere in that velodrome when the Olympics were on and going back there was special.
"I have competed at all three [Track World Cups] in Britain in London, Manchester and Glasgow. I've had the opportunity to race at all three velodromes.
"My biggest was Glasgow, I went there and won double gold in the team pursuit and omnium and for me that was pretty big to win my first World Cup gold."
