After Richie Porte's victory in the penultimate stage, Alberto Contador knew he needed a huge effort to make up the gap on Henao.
A huge effort was exactly what he produced and for most of the stage he looked as if he would take the event from Henao.
The Colombian won in the end by just two seconds, salvaging his yellow jersey in the final stage after Spaniard Contador (Trek Segafredo) pulled away 50 km from the finish.

Alberto Contador: I had a go today

Contador picked up two seconds in time bonuses at the intermediate sprint and another six by taking second place in the eighth stage behind compatriot De La Cruz (Quick Step Floors).
Soler broke away from the chasing pack with Contador and De la Cruz but towards the end of the race as the riders went downhill Henao started to make up ground.
He started to close the gap on Contador and he forced the race right down to the wire in a dramatic finish.
De la Cruz made his move and took the stage over Soler and , although Contador finished second, Henao made up enough to win the overall event.
There was a very interested spectator in amongst the final stage.
