Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso has described his transfer to the Discovery Channel team as a "liberation," after having been banned from competing since the outbreak of the Operacion Puerto blood doping scandal in July.
The 28-year-old agreed a deal to end his contract with the CSC team last month after he lost the confidence of sporting director Bjarne Riis, and on Thursday admitted his delight at his move to the American outfit.
"I'm very happy, because I think it [Discovery] is the ideal team," he commented. "The ambitions we both have don't focus solely on the Tour de France, but on a whole range of events that includes the Giro d'Italia.
"They have guaranteed me everything that I have asked for," he said, adding that he had not yet spoken to seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, who retains a controlling interest in the team.
