Russia's Alexandr Arekeev took the overall lead after winning the second stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico race from Civitavecchia to Marsciano on Thursday.
The Acqua & Sapone rider was part of an early attack with three others before going clear 13 km from the line. Italy's Daniele Contrini was second and Sven Krauss of Germany finished third.
It was 24-year-old Arekeev's first win as a professional.
Friday's 213-km third stage is from Marsciano to Macerata through the Apennine hills north of Rome.
