Harry Tanfield thrills home crowd to take Stage 1 upset

Harry Tanfield (Canyon Eisberg) delighted the home crowd as he won Stage 1 of the Tour de Yorkshire following a breakaway sprint.

Tanfield, 23, has been tipped to have a bright future as he continues to gain experience and he came from near the back of a five-man pack with a perfectly timed sprint to win in Doncaster.

The breakaway got ahead of the peloton early, with Yorkshireman Tanfield emerging victorious from that group.

Tour of Yorkshire: Harry Tanfield wins opener

Alistair Slater and Michael Cuming had looked in good positions but they could not cope with Tanfield's burst as they finished second and third respectively.

The peloton, which contained Mark Cavendish, desperately tried to reel the leading group in but were unable to do so.
