Remi Cavagna takes Stage 3 in California after breakaway

Deceuninck-Quick-Step’s Remi Cavagna took stage three of the Tour of California – riding solo for 75 kilometres and holding out for the win.

The Frenchman was part of a 19-man breakaway who took advantage of early crosswinds to catch a break over the peloton on the 208km stage from Stockton to Morgan Hill.
From that group, two men – Cavagna and American Alex Hoehn – were able to get away, with the French rider later striking near the foot of the hors-categorie Mount Hamilton.
With Tejay Van Garderen’s yellow jersey safe from the three leading riders, the peloton did not appear keen to push themselves to catch the two riders.
Despite some shaky descending, Cavagna held strong while Hoehn faded fast and was eventually reeled in and passed by a two-man breakaway of Benjamin King and Simon Geschke with 3.5km to go.
The 23-year-old took the stage, coming in seven minutes and 11 seconds head of King and Geschke, while the peloton rolled in 36 seconds further back.
The general classification was largely unchanged, van Garderen holding a six-second lead over Gianni Moscon, and Kasper Asgreen a further second down.
Luke Rowe is the highest-placed Briton, 18 minutes 51 seconds off the pace in 65th.
