The Discovery Channel rider won by 13 seconds from Vuelta a España runner-up Alejandro Valverde and Lampre's Slovenian climber Tadej Valjavec.
Saunier Duval's David De La Fuente led over six third category climbs during the 162km trek from Albaida and was joined by Scottish team-mate David Millar, another former Vuelta runner-up Oscar Sevilla, now with Relax-Gam, Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel) and David Munoz (Fuerteventura).
