Former World Time Trial Champion, Joane Somarriba Arrola of Spain, could only muster up a forth place, 1'15" behind, while veteran Jeannie Longo from France recorded a respectable 15th place.
Thurig, who took the Bronze in the women's time trial at Athens, has become World Champions for the first time in her career, finishing the 24.05km circuit in a time of 30'53".
After the race Thürig said: "I felt a bit sick before the race, and a bit tired, but I went aggressive right from the start. As soon as I started over-taking riders and heard that I had a sixty second advantage I just went for it!"

Earlier, the people of the Verona environs were treated to a Junior German sandwich with a Czech filler!
18-year old German rider Patrick Gretsch won the Junior World Championships Time Trial at Bardolini in sunny north Italy, beating the Czech Roman Kreuziger by 15 seconds, and his compatriot (and fellow peroxide blond) Stephan Schaefer by 16 seconds, setting a time of 30'29" over the 24.05km circuit.
