Tom Daley put himself in pole position to secure a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games after claiming silver at the World Aquatics Championships.
Daley and his partner Noah Williams took second place behind Lian Junjie and Yang Hao in the 10m synchronised event.
Finishing in the top four in the event guaranteed the country a spot in the event at Paris 2024.
The spot is not certain to be Daley’s, as it is down to the association to select the divers, but his return to the sport at the highest level leaves him well placed to secure a place at a fifth Olympics.
Daley stepped away from diving after winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, but recently returned to the sport and was happy with the result in Doha.
"Once I got into the competition, and being with Noah, I kind of relaxed and was like, 'ah, this is what it feels like'," Daley said. "We knew that we had to try to qualify for a spot for the Olympics, which we succeeded in - but I think we went into it more fighting for the medals rather than thinking about the spots."
After posting a score of 422.37, which was well off the pace of the Chinese pair’s total of 470.76, Daley said it was now a case of building up his fitness and form.
"Today was what it all came down to, whether I was going to be able to be fit enough to dive with Noah in the first place, and then be able to actually come in the top qualifying spots," Daley said.
"That's mission accomplished so far, and now it's about staying fit and healthy to get to the start line, so now the real work starts."
Artistic swimmers Izzy Thorpe and Kate Shortman secured a spot in the free duet at the Olympics after taking bronze in Doha.
"It's such a relief now to say we have qualified," Shortman said. "It's incredible, honestly. If people knew how much it takes to get to an Olympic Games, it really should not be underestimated.
"People ask you all the time, 'so when are you going to the Olympics?' and you have to say, 'the job's not done yet'.
"It's such a relief to be able to say we have finally made it."
