Like every year, the CHIO of Aachen attracts some of the best riders in the world on its legendary grass track. Some highlights punctuate the week of festivities. The Turkish Airlines-Prize of Europe will be the opportunity to see Harry Charles, the young British rider recently crowned European Young Rider Champion in Fontainebleau (France).
The Mercedes-Benz Nations’ Cup will take place on thursday night. In total, eight teams will compete on the course designed by Frank Rothenberger. Great Britain will not be represented. Ireland will line up a good team, with Cian O’Connor (Good Luck), Cameron Hanley (Quirex), Darragh Kenny (Babalou 41) and Shane Sweetnam (Chaqui Z).
Rider in top form at the moment, and recent winner of the Chantilly Grand Prix, Nicola Philippaerts (H & M Arley v. Bisschop) will be keen to bring his team to victory.
The highlight of the weekend, the traditional Grand Prix Aachen Sunday will decide the best rider of the competition.
A few hundred kilometers away, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the Longines CSI5* of Ascona will also take place this weekend. In the idyllic Swiss Alps, a few top riders will make the trip. World number one Harrie Smolders (NED) will be present with his leading horses Don VHP Z N.O.P. and Emerald. Michael Whitaker (GBR) will be there with his horses El Wee Widge and Viking. The competition will also be an opportunity to see many Swiss and Italian riders making the trip. The Italian Luca Maria Moneta (Neptune Brecourt) and the Swiss Pius Schwizer (Chidame Z) will be attending.
As in Aachen, the competition ends on Sunday with the Longines Grand Prix of Ascona. The qualified riders will participate in this CSI 5*.
