FIA European Rally Championship Junior Under 28 contender Nikolay Gryazin marked his ERC return with the quickest time through Rally di Roma Capitale’s Qualifying Stage, edging out Alexey Lukyanuk by 0.1 seconds.
Having been used for two free practice runs prior to qualifying, gravel had been swept onto the all-tarmac Qualifying Stage, making conditions tricky for everyone.

Sports Racing Technologies driver Gryazin had already started his Rally di Roma Capitale preparations in style, by beating several ERC Junior U28 rivals to second place in Rally Internazionale del Casentino aboard his ŠKODA Fabia R5 last weekend.

Gryazin continued his good form into the Qualifying Stage, which dictates tomorrow’s start selection order, by edging out

Third fastest, 1.5s off Gryazin’s lightning pace was ERC Junior U28 championship leader Fabian Kreim, the ŠKODA AUTO Deutschland prodigy edging out Rufa Sport’s Grzegorz Grzyb by a mere 0.05s.

Further ERC Junior U28 front-runners usurped their more experienced rivals, as Fredrik Åhlin and Chris Ingram went fifth and sixth fastest aboard their respective CA1 Sport and Toksport WRT Fabias, again separated by only 0.05s.

Overall championship leader Bruno Magalhães was seventh fastest in his SEAJETS-backed Fabia, remarking on how an increasing amount of gravel on the roads had changed his approach to his Qualifying Stage attempt.

“I think was good,” said Magalhães of his time at stage end. “The road is dirty in some points. I made a FP in the beginning so I felt a big difference in the road, but the feeling with the car is very good to be honest.”

Local legend Paolo Andreucci was the fastest Italian in eighth place, 2.75s behind Gryazin’s winning time, ahead of ERC Junior U28 competitor Rhys Yates and ŠKODA young talent Juuso Nordgren in ninth and tenth.

Rally Technology driver Łukasz Habaj could only manage the 20th fastest time after a mistake caused a puncture and cracked rim, while Palmeirinha Rally’s Paulo Nobre did not set a time at all, having suffered two broken wheels in free practice beforehand.
