ERC rally winner Al-Attiyah embarks on Dakar mission
FIA European Rally Championship event winner Nasser Al-Attiyah will take on one of motorsport’s toughest challenges when he contests the Dakar cross-country raid from 6-17 January.
Al-Attiyah, who won the ERC-counting Cyprus Rally in 2017, is one of the favourites to win the hugely-demanding event, which takes place entirely in Peru over a competitive route of 3000 kilometres divided into 10 gruelling legs.
Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who claimed ERC gold in Cyprus in 2014, is also on the Dakar entry, along with Harry Hunt – who contested two ERC events in 2012 – and Erik Wevers, boss of respected ERC team Wevers Sport. Rallying legend Carlos Sainz, who won seven ERC rallies during his early career, is defending his 2018 title.
Dakar 2019 starts and finishes in the Peruvian capital Lima today (Sunday) and runs until 17 January over a 5000-kilometre route. Competitors get one rest day on 12 January.
