SEAJETS-backed Bruno Magalhães has underlined the importance of moving to the top of the title standings in his bid to continue his pursuit of FIA European Rally Championship glory.
Second place on the Cyprus Rally gives the Portuguese a 15-point lead over Alexey Lukyanuk – who failed to go the distance on the second event running – at the halfway point of the season.

However, Magalhães was unable to confirm if he’ll have the funds to contest next month’s Rally di Roma Capitale due to his ongoing financial struggles.

“I am in first place in the championship and this is very important for me,” said the Portuguese, who arrived in Cyprus after winning the EKO Acropolis Rally. “I don’t have a project for all the year, it’s rally by rally and it depends on the result. I am now going to try to find the sponsorship for the next one. It will be tough.”

Magalhães missed out on winning the Cyprus Rally by a scant 0.6s to Cypriot champion Simos Galatariotis, point to a momentary delay on the final stage as a key factor in the result.

“When you lose by 0.6s it’s nothing,” said the ARC Sport ŠKODA Fabia driver. “I was lucky because Nasser [Al-Attiyah] had a puncture in the last stage [so I could move to second] but when I past Nasser he made a reverse [from the puncture] and I need to stop. From one side I was lucky because he punctured. But it’s like that.”
