Laurent Pellier was pleasantly surprised by his first FIA European Rally Championship stage win at Rally Islas Canarias, taking advantage of tricky changeable conditions to do so.
Though he would later drop back behind more experienced rivals, PEUGEOT Rally Academy pilot Pellier stormed to first place in ERC Junior U28 and second overall after winning SS2, setting a 10m07.7s which even championship leader Alexey Lukyanuk failed to match.
“It was a big surprise for us,” said Pellier. “We didn’t want to take any risks. The scratch [fastest time] in the second stage was really a surprise for us. The car was perfect and we will work for this afternoon to do a good time.”
Pellier capitalised on an unexpected advantage of starting well down the running order, heading into SS2 last of cars similar in spec to his PEUGEOT 208 T16.
“It was really changeable this morning and one corner is totally dry and then it was totally rain. I think you need to read the road and then it’s okay. Some guys have soft tyre but for us we had hard tyre. It was a good balance.
