Nikolay Gryazin believes his impressive run to fourth place on Rallye du Var last weekend can only make him a better driver as he prepares for the next stage of his, thus far, hugely promising career.
Gryazin, the winner of the FIA ERC Junior Under 28 Championship for 2018* alongside co-driver Yaroslav Fedorov, was using the challenging French asphalt event to build his experience for 2019, when he’s planning to compete in the world championship alongside an ERC campaign, his reward for his ERC Junior achievements this year.
“Rallye du Var will count as a valuable experience because the race showed us what we need to work on,” said the 21-year-old Russian, who was driving a Sports Racing Technologies ŠKODA Fabia R5. “The lack of testing on the dirty and wet Tarmac resulted in flawed set-ups, and I had to experiment, carefully adjusting the settings during the rally.
“This is a truly legendary event, and the fourth place finish is quite a good result, especially considering [the] difficult conditions and the fact that for us it was our Rallye du Var debut. We’re very pleased with the quickest time on three special stages, but this is the result of a combination of weather and road conditions which were suitable for us.
“Moreover, it’s very nice to see such a strong level of competition. It’s always good when the pace of your rivals leaves you no time to relax. Such a close run makes you push to the limit and show your best.
“Rallye du Var has completed our season. Now we’re going to start preparation work for 2019. We will conduct winter test sessions and preparations for Rally Sweden. We [have] planned a big test programme and [are] going to take part in a few races in Scandinavia and, perhaps, [the] Baltics.”
*Subject to confirmation of the results by the FIA
