Łukasz Pieniążek’s return to the FIA European Rally Championship has come to an abrupt halt on stage three of PZM Rally Poland, crashing into a tree and retiring.
FIA ERC Junior Under 28 competitor Pieniążek crashed his Printsport-run ŠKODA Fabia R5 only 400 metres into Saturday’s second stage, striking a tree on the inside of a slow left hairpin.
Pieniążek had started his home ERC event strongly, the Polish driver running fourth after stage two despite a less than favourable road order position.
The ERC Junior Under 27 graduate had hoped to compete for overall honours on his third Rally Poland appearance, having finished sixth and P11 in class during the previous two years as a world championship event.
He has tasted ERC success in the past, winning the Circuit of Ireland and finishing second on Barum Czech Rally Zlín in 2016 while competing in ERC Junior.
