Brothers Julian and Simon Wagner – competitors in the FIA European Rally Championship in recent seasons – experienced dramatically contrasting fortunes on last weekend’s Jänner Rallye.
While Julian (pictured) took his maiden Austrian championship victory on his debut in an R5 car, older brother Simon was eliminated from the lead battle on the final day when his ŠKODA Fabia R5 suffered electrical failure.

But following the finish in Freistadt on Saturday evening, Baumschlager Rallye & Racing-run Julian Wagner said his win alongside ERC co-driving regular Anne Katharina Stein was a “dream come true”.

Meanwhile, top seed and sometime ERC contender Hermann Neubauer suffered early heartache when a newly-fitted driveshaft broke a handful of kilometres from the start of the opening stage.
