Marton and Kreiss secure Hungarian fencing double at 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei

Marton claimed gold in the women’s sabre and Kreiss took away the honours in the foil competition, whilst Aleksandra Zamachowska claimed the gold in an all-Polish women’s epee Final.

The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural event which is staged every two years in a different city, and is widely regarded as coming only second to the Olympic Games in terms of importance.

Held from 19 August and finishing tomorrow 30 August 2017, Taipei in Taiwan is the venue for the 2017 Summer Universiade, the XXIX Summer Universiade, commonly known as Taipei 2017 Universiade, which consists of 14 compulsory sports, with a further three optional sports also chosen by the host country.

In the women’s foil event, Hungary’s Fanny Kreiss beat Russia’s Yana Alborova 15-7 in the Final.

Kreiss had earlier edged past Chloe Jubenot of France 15-14 in a thrilling quarter-final bout, before booking her place in the Final with a 15-10 victory over Italy’s Beatrice Monaco. Alborova’s passage to the gold medal match saw her ease comfortably past Hong Kong’s Kimberley Vanessa Cheung 15-9 in the quarter-finals, before accounting for her compatriot Adelya Abdrakhmanova 15-13 in the semi-finals.

Anna Marton made it a Hungarian double when she won gold in the women’s sabre competition.That came courtesy of a 15-12 victory over Korea’s Seona Hwang, on the back of two victories over Japanese opponents in the lead-up. The first was a comfortable 15-6 success over Risa Takashima in the quarter-finals, before a 15-8 win over Misaki Emura in the semi-finals. Hwang had fought past Italy’s Sofia Ciaraglia in the quarter-finals with a 15-5 victory, but found Ciaraglia’s compatriot and teammate, Chiara Ormile, a stiffer opponent in the semi-finals, before progressing thanks to a 15-13.

There was an all-Polish Final in the Women’s epee as Aleksandra Zamachowska beat Kamila Pytka 15-8 in the gold medal match. Zamachowska had been particularly impressive in the lead-up to the Final with a 15-5 quarter-final victory over Sweden’s Asa Linde, which was backed up by a useful 15-10 success in the semi-final against Italy’s Roberta Marzani. Pytka encountered sterner tests on her route to the Final, winning her quarter-final 9-8 against Hong Kong’s Sera Song, before claiming victory again by a single touch margin in the semi-final that followed thanks to a 14-13 decision over Ukraine’s Kseniya Pantelyeyva.

In the team events, Italy overcame Russia 45-25 to win the women’s team foil competition. The Italians were in fine form throughout but were made to work hard beating France 45-42 in the quarter-finals, before seeing off Hungary 45-31 in the semi-finals

In the women’s epee, Ukraine fought out a thrilling gold medal Final with the USA before eventually claiming the title thanks to a 45-44 victory. The winners had earlier accounted for Switzerland 45-33 in the quarter-finals, ahead of beating Poland 45-38 in the semi-finals.

Japan claimed the women’s team sabre gold medals after beating Hungary 45-38 in the Final. It capped a fine showing from the Japanese who overcame the challenge of USA 45-34 in the quarter-finals and France by a 45-39 scoreline in the semi-finals.
