The team, who won bronze in the London 2012 and 10 years earlier in Barcelona, opened the game confidently but New Zealand looked to be the side with a more dangerous pace.
New Zealand fluffed a couple of decent chances, once narrowly missing the far side of the goal with three minutes of the first quarter to go.
A minute later the Kiwis conceded a penalty corner but Great Britain could do nothing with it and the first half finished 0-0.
After the break GB quickly forced another penalty corner but Laura Unsworth could not break through the New Zealand defence.
Lily Owsley put the pressure on for GB to force another penalty corner with 8 minutes of the second quarter remaining, but it was Alex Danson with a deflected ball who scored GB's first goal.
New Zealand appeared to wake up after going a goal down, and went on the attack. With two minutes of the last half to play, GB conceded a penalty corner but Anita McLaren knocked it wide of the post.
In the third quarter, Christy Cullen was forced to take a moment out after coming out of a tackle with a gash to the head, moments after she returned to play, Georgie Twigg was escorted from the pitch after taking a ball to the face at close range.
In the final quarter, Helen Richardson-Walsh was fouled by Kayla Whitelock to be awarded a penalty which she duly converted to take the score to 2-0 in GB's favour.
With only eight minutes remaining, Owsley hit the deck after she was fouled to earn another penalty, this time converted by Danson, for GB's third goal of the match and her fifth of the tournament.
By that point it was too late for New Zealand to come back, ensuring a place in the final for Great Britain, and a guaranteed silver or gold - their best ever result at an Olympic games.
